Door and window security standards explained
Security marketing is full of badges. Only a handful represent real, independently tested performance.
PAS 24
The enhanced security performance standard for doorsets and windows in the UK. It tests the complete assembly, not just the lock, against realistic attack methods. On new dwellings it is a Building Regulations requirement in England (Approved Document Q).
Secured by Design
The police-backed accreditation scheme. Products carrying it have met PAS 24 or equivalent and the company has been audited. It is a genuinely useful shorthand.
TS007 cylinder star ratings
The cylinder is the classic weak point. Aim for a three-star cylinder, or a one-star cylinder combined with two-star security handles. Anything less can be vulnerable to snapping.
Laminated glass
Toughened glass shatters; laminated glass holds together on its interlayer. On accessible ground-floor openings and glazed doors, laminated is a small extra cost and a significant deterrent.
