What it is, in plain English
Bifolds are the choice when you genuinely want the wall gone in summer. Panels concertina back onto a track and stack neatly against the reveal.
The trade-off is the stacked frame when open and more sightlines when closed. Panel width, threshold type and running gear quality are the specification points that matter.

- Predominantly aluminium; PVC-U and timber options exist for narrower openings.
- Energy efficiency
- Modern thermally broken systems perform well, though there is more frame than on a slider.

- Multi-point locking on the master door and shootbolts on each panel; laminated glass recommended.
- Colours & finishes
- Any RAL powder coat, dual colour inside and out.
- Hardware
- Top-hung or bottom-rolling gear, low or flush thresholds, and traffic-door options for everyday use.
- Glass
- Large panes, solar control coatings and toughened or laminated safety glass throughout.
- Maintenance
- Keep the track clean and clear — that is where nearly all bifold problems begin.
- Typical applications
- Kitchen extensions, garden rooms, orangeries and rear elevations from three to seven panels.
